About this lesson

Reflecting decades of work, Herman students Anna Racicot and Gabrielle Herbertson organized, edited and compiled two books containing hundreds of Herman’s lessons. The books, Earth Journey I and Earth Journey II, are the source of most of the weekly lessons published on this site.
Each of the books contains more than 100 photos of Herman’s paintings, an introduction detailing the history and suggested use of the lessons, and an appendix that contains additional information about the communities practices.
Both books are available for sale through the Earth Journey organization’s online store.
A Herman Rednick Lesson
What is compassion? When you are ill, a close rela- tive may feel great sorrow. And if someone is about to cross the bridge, a relative may cry aloud and pull her hair. Is that compassion? No, it is love on an emotional plane.
The Great Masters, who have compassion and see our suffering, do not get emotionally involved. Otherwise, they could not function. They see with a clear eye what the problem is with the people they are helping. Thus, they send forth a beam of spiritual fire which is compassion. The love we experience with one another is not compas- sion. As we develop love and walk up the mountain, we move into the higher octave of love which is compassion.
